The 3rd Annual International Black Media Festival in OxfordThe award winning film JUSTICE makes it European Première at the award winning 3rd Annual International Black Media Festival. Made by civil rights lawyers, JUSTICE stars Roger Guenveur Smith as an ambitious lawyer out to change a corrupt legal system. JUSTICE was inspired by the real-life experiences of civil rights lawyers, including writer/director/producer Jeanne-Marie Almonor. Ms. Almonor grew up in inner-city Brooklyn, went to Harvard Law School, and joined a corporate law firm in Minneapolis. After a few years, she left the firm to start a civil rights law practice with her husband and fellow Harvard Law grad, John Shulman. For more than a decade, the couple has fought on the front lines in the battle for social and economic justice. Ms. Almonor and Mr. Shulman made JUSTICE to expose the truth about the American criminal justice system, where racial disparities in arrest rates, charges, convictions and incarceration have put 1 in 10 African-American men aged 25-29 in prison (compared to 1 in 100 white men). JUSTICE awards have been numerous they include the grand prize as overall 2005 Spaghetti Junction Urban Film Festival Winner in Atlanta. The 2005 Dallas Juneteenth Festival honored JUSTICE with a special Emancipation Series screening and award. JUSTICE was nominated for a 2005 NAACP Image Award in the Outstanding Television Movie, Miniseries or Dramatic Special category. The premiere takes places at the prestigious and historic Oxford University Natural History Museum. The evening starts with a cocktail reception, hosted by Cockspur Rum, in the Museum’s court area. BAFTA Lifetime achievement recipient, accomplished producer, author and broadcaster Dr. Floella Benjamin OBE will deliver the keynote presentation. The producers and directors of JUSTICE, Jeanne-Marie Almonor and John Shulman, are flying in direct from the USA to attend the screening and host the Q&A session. Dr. Floella Benjamin said ‘I am honoured to deliver the keynote presentation at the launch of the International Black media Festival in Oxford’.
