As the media attention shifts to other issues UHUK urges its members and supporters to continue to support us as we work to provide basic necessities and rebuild our country.

We send our condolences to those in the Chilean community for the earthquake that hit this week.



A brief update from Carole Attis; a more detailed report will be shared in a special newsletter out next week. The following excerpts are directly from Carole's diary during her time in Haiti



I wanted to go to Haiti for many reasons :

First reason was to see my people (parents ,friends and fellow citizens) and see how concretely we can help on the ground. Part of my visit was to see the remaining of the school we sponsored as well as distributing the first aid shipment and obviously assess area where help is most needed.

Psychological Trauma

Haiti has never experienced anything like that before. 12 th January 2010 will be in people's memory for ever. The earthquake's after-effects are far more important and profound than one can ever imagine. People have lost part of themselves since this tragic event:
Material Damages

Most people lost everything they had. They live in different types of shelters, some with tents, some with tents made of sheets. Sleeping in the streets has become something very common as having a shower in front of everybody eyes. Privacy is a luxury word. The remaining of an entire life is packed up there and then in a few boxes under a tent. People have spent decades to build up a life in less than 1 minute everything has been vanished away. Some collapsed houses still have dead corpses under the rubbles which makes the smell in some area unbearable.
Difficultés met in Haïti included lack of security, poor infrastructure and lack of education to name a few.
Educational Project

I first visited the remaining of the school sponsored by UHUK with the co-founder Ricot Osias. Nothing was left from the school but rubble .It was obvious that no teaching could be ever done again in the school as it was. It had to be entirely rebuilt. The question is How?

The parents are very pressed by UHUK's work in England and are very grateful we have chosen to help their children. The school accepts children from all ages, meaning that every child above the entry age would be integrated to pre school class while the other school would have refused.

There are many challenges to overcome in order to run the school again. Indeed the land and the ground floor do not belong to the school, but only the first floor was gratuitously lent to the school by a local church.

Now the school needs to find a new piece of land and finance to build a new school.

However this is not the biggest challenge. Indeed before the quake the school teachers were not paid on a regular basis and therefore the tuition depend on their good willing. Now that the country is in a state chaos it will be more and more difficult for people to give generously their time to educate the children. Therefore there is, more than ever, the need of a sustainable financing to ensure a proper access to education.

Hope for the future

Haitian people are very brave. even though the country has been under unbelievable stress and shocked, people still try to leave a normal life, meaning that they return to their businesses, try to find quick and practical solutions to accommodate themselves. There is a great sense of solidarity, for instance people whose house has not been affected are offering their garden ass a refugee camp. Others have invaded hospitals, gardens, school, parks and anywhere available to form their living area. They have even spread tents in such a way that they recreate small communities with "street numbers"

Despite the disaster and the state of chaos, Haitian people are willing to move forward, they are resilient and are keeping faith in the future.
